Transition from Summer to Fall with a Solid Sleeveless Cotton Dress

Hey y’all- hope your week is off to a good start. I’m in the middle of a few really busy weeks, as I adjust to  my new fall schedule. My BSF (Bible Study Fellowship) class started back up last week after being on hiatus for the summer. I also started attending a new small group at my old church that I’ve just began re-visiting after being a member at a different church for the past three years. Though I’m no longer a student, September still brings a feeling of newness each year. Although fall activities have started up and the calendar says “September,” the weather still screams “summer” here in the South. I’m a traditionalist and put away my seersucker, white jeans, and super-summery Lilly dresses after Labor Day. However, it’s still way too hot to even think about wearing boots, scarves, and cozy pullovers. Therefore, figuring out what to wear can be quite challenging during this transitional period between summer and fall. Fortunately, I have a few go-to outfits to wear that keep me cool without looking overly summery during this stretch. One of these is a basic solid sleeveless dress. Keep reading for some inspiration on how to transition from summer to fall with a solid sleeveless cotton dress!

Lauren James Tailgate Dress

Last year when Lauren James had a sale, I grabbed a couple of their solid cotton knit dresses, called the Tailgate Dress. When I bought them, I specifically thought about how I needed more dresses that I could wear during this weird interim period where summer weather meets fall calendar. Here in the South, it’s not unusual to experience days in the 80s even into October. In fact, I wore my pink Lauren James Tailgate Dress for an evening scavenger hunt during the first weekend of October last year.

Solid Cotton Dress

This exact dress is no longer available, but Team LJ (the collegiate apparel branch of Lauren James) has a very similar solid dress in multiple colors. In addition, I found some currently available sleeveless cotton dress options from Old Navy, Gap, and LOFT!

Here’s a look at the back of my Lauren James Tailgate Dress!

A basic solid sleeveless cotton dress lends itself to a variety of jewelry options. On this particular occasion, I styled it with my classic ivory pearl Kendra Scott Elisa Pendant and Elle earrings. In addition, I added a pop of print with my Lilly Pulitzer Pink Lemonade Boca Bangle. Unfortunately, this exact bracelet is no longer available. However, I did notice that eBay has a few Lilly Pulitzer bangles in various prints here.

Love My Jacks

Also, I totally wear my classic Jack Rogers sandals during the summer to fall transition period. I don’t own a pair of white Jacks, so any of mine are still fair game after Labor Day! These metallic Jack Rogers pair nicely with a basic solid sleeveless cotton dress. You can shop all Jack Rogers here.

Morgan Street Food Hall Raleigh

Side note-the night of the BSF Scavenger Hunt in downtown Raleigh, we ate at Morgan Street Food Hall. I highly recommend if you’re in the Raleigh area. I devoured my tacos before I had a chance to take a picture though!

Hope you enjoyed this post and found it helpful if you also struggled to get dressed when it’s no longer summer, but not quite fall. I personally think the summer to fall transition is harder than winter to spring. March is usually significantly colder than September here in North Carolina. Also, if Easter falls in later March or early April, then there won’t be much of a window where it’s warm enough to really have the urge to wear seersucker prior to Easter.

What are some of your go-to outfits for the summer to fall transition period?
