Holiday Style Essential: Plaid Flannel Skirt

Hey y’all- hope your weekend was great and that you’re staying safe and warm if snowed in. We still have several inches of snow on the ground in Durham! Today I’m excited to share a Christmas outfit inspiration post featuring my new favorite holiday style essential, a plaid flannel skirt. Last week I hung out with Amelia Cassar Photography (and her adorable new assistant) at the Carolina Inn in Chapel Hill. We took some festive photos with their gorgeous Christmas decorations. I wore my new scalloped plaid flannel skirt from Lauren James. It was one of my Black Friday purchases, and I’m glad it arrived in time for this shoot. Keep reading to see how I styled my plaid flannel skirt, and for a glimpse at the Carolina Inn’s magical decor.

Mad for Plaid

One reason why I love plaid for the holidays is that it’s super festive, but doesn’t scream “Christmas” to the point that you can’t continue to wear it throughout the winter. I know that I will definitely continue to wear this plaid flannel skirt in January and February as well. Although plaid will transition nicely into the remainder of winter, it’s hard to beat classic plaid with the backdrop of Christmas decor. For instance, I’m loving how it looks against this gorgeous tree in the main lobby of the Carolina Inn.

A Scalloped Staple

So I have actually been wanting this Lauren James scalloped plaid flannel skirt since last year. Therefore, I definitely had to give in and buy it this year. It’s the exact same style as the scalloped seersucker skirt and scalloped corduroy skirt from Lauren James that I have previously featured on here. Therefore, knowing that I love the fit and feel of this particular style contributed to the appeal of adding the plaid flannel version to my wardrobe.

Multiple Styling Options

I styled my Lauren James plaid flannel skirt with a basic white scoop-neck long-sleeved tee (also from Lauren James) and white tights. However, this particular plaid has both black and navy in it, so you could pair it with a black top & tights or navy. Wearing a basic neutral color top with this skirt lends itself to variety of jewelry options too. For the first part of this shoot, I wore my Kate Spade Minnie Mouse pendant necklace and Kendra Scott Elle earrings. Then I swapped them out for my new Anthropologie Block Initial Necklace and Tory Burch logo stud earrings.

Festive Accessories

A Starbucks reusable red cup also makes the perfect accessory! As I mentioned in my Christmas Season Bucket List post, I’ve cashed in on the discounted holiday drinks multiple times already!

My Lilly Pulitzer stocking I got as a gift with purchase during Lilly’s Cyber Monday Promo is another festive accessory. The tassels add such a fun touch and I’m pleased with the mystery print I got! (I look forward to sharing more about my other goodies from the recent Lilly promotion in a future post).

Porch Decor

In addition to the beautiful trees inside, the Carolina Inn also has amazing porch decor during the Christmas season. I love the wreaths and garland. Also, how cute are those rocking chairs?! (Although it’s a bit chilly to really utilize them this time of year).
